“Decent women did not have to cover their faces, the ones that covered their faces were the prostitutes...” what a statement! Would you like to find out why?😊
Hello Dear , indeed I must say a big welcome to you. This is another exciting and transforming revelation from the best book on planet earth for eons of time. in fact, it has Been the BESTSELLER since its publication.
Today will not be real stories of the 21st century as usual, but I am going to be showing you deep insights from the BOOK OF BEGINNINGS – Genesis. Indeed the wisdom we find in this book is very relevant in our time. It also helps us understand why we practice certain things up till today in the TRADITIONAL SETTING.
As you can see from the title, I would be showing you the origin of the Veil Women Put on during Marriage Ceremonies – Either in the Church or Traditional marriage setting.
💡You would be learning its Biblical Significance.
You would then wonder if it’s everyone that should be veiled at their wedding or it’s just for the formality of following the wedding Tradition.
With the above being said, our story would be deduced from Genesis 24. This is about how Isaac – The Son of Abraham got married to Rebekah – The Daughter of Abraham’s Brother Nahor. It should be noted that although the world has populated over the years to where we have dichotomies among humans – as to who is a first-class citizen or second-class citizen, we are all from loins of ADAM and EVE.
Before we get to the reason for this blog post, I would ask certain questions from the story and try to answer them – the comments section is readily available if I need to be corrected about my assertions – writer smiles .
💡. In Genesis 26:1-8 we see Abraham creating a binding pact with his Oldest Servant Eliezer to go to his Homeland to get a wife for his son Isaac. Why must it be his Homeland?
Many of our parents – like mine😀 use this scripture as a backing to the ideology that when I think of marriage, it has to be from my TRIBE or HOMETOWN or STATE. Now this makes LOGICAL sense. But we have to look at the motivation behind the reasoning of our Father of Faith – Abraham.
Abraham wanted Isaac to marry within the family. This was a common acceptable practice at this time. It had the added advantage of avoiding intermarriage with pagan neighbors . A son’s wife was usually chosen by parents.
Today Our parents do not really go out there to look for spouses for their children for the sake of not being blamed in the future, but YOU MAKE YOUR CHOICE AND BRING HIM OR HER FOR VETTING😀.
So I believe that in our time the focus should be on;
💡Do these persons share a common faith as Christians not minding the Denomination?
💡Do the parents or relative consent to the union. This is very important.
💡Do this People Love each other?
HOW WOULD ELIEZER DO THIS? HE HAS TO SEEK THE FACE OF GOD WITHOUT BEING TOLD
This is very important too. If God is not directing you to that man or woman, you are bound to make a terrible mistake. He/She may be as sweet as honey in the beginning but as bitter as gall In the end (Proverbs 5:1-8). Just BEFORE HE FURNISHED PRAYING ( Genesis 24:15 ) he saw a woman coming out with a water jug in her shoulder.
You see when the bible says that before we open our mouths in prayer, God already knows our desires before we say them. Eliezer experienced that🙋.
📌Do you think it was right for Eliezer to request for a specific sign?
The sign he requested was only slightly out of the ordinary. The hospitality of that time required women at the well to offer water to weary travelers, BUT NOT TO THEIR ANIMALS. Eliezer was simply asking God to show him a woman with an ATTITUDE OF SERVICE – someone who would go beyond the expected. AT THIS POINT I WOULD SAY;
THIS IS NOT AN EXCUSE FOR ANY LADY TO GIVE INTO SLEEPING WITH A MAN – In the name of going beyond the expected.
💡ANY MAN OR WOMAN THAT EXPECTS THAT, DOES NOT HAVE A GODLY MINDSET. SIMPLE.
Eliezer did not ask for a woman with good looks or wealth (today that’s like a trend😀). He knew the importance of finding a woman with the RIGHT HEART. Only God who sees the heart knows exactly the right person (Genesis 24:12-22).
💡Just a little observation. In verse 16 -18 you would notice something. Although Eliezer did not pray as regards the appearance of the woman, He OBSERVED HER to be beautiful and of marriageable age…
This should teach the men like me that –
ALTHOUGH WE SHOULD PRAY TO GOD AS REGARDS THE INNER BEAUTY OF A WOMAN, WE SHOULD NOT BE BLIND TO OUR NATURAL TENDENCIES OF WHO WE THINK IS BEAUTIFUL TO US.
In Verse 17 of the same Genesis 24, we notice that Eliezer RAN OVER TO HER to get her attention. He asked for a drink for himself only. This should teach the men a vital lesson too.
DO NOT STAY IN YOUR ROOM ALL WEEKS PRAYING FOR A WOMAN TO APPEAR BEFORE YOU – you might marry a Ghost😀.
GO OUT THERE AND MAKE CONNECTIONS. SHE WOULD COME FROM YOUR ACQUAINTANCES.
Also to the ladies,
WHEN A MAN TRIES TO GET YOUR ATTENTION, DO NOT BE A SNOB. IT WOULD TAKE NOTHING FROM YOU TO BE NICE.
Maybe that is why some ladies are not married.
💡Please I hope you are learning some principles here because we are about to get to the serious part.😃
If you are a lady reading this, you might notice that in (maybe) your previous relationships, the men did not POP THE BIG – will you marry me? QUESTION when you expected. So maybe you left. Even though in this scenario Eliezer is not the suitor, notice what the bible says in Verse 21
The servant watched her in silence, wondering whether or not the Lord had given him success in his mission”.
💡ALWAYS REMEMBER THIS.
EVERY MAN IN HIS SOUND MIND ALWAYS HAS A DEFINED MISSION IN ANY RELATIONSHIP. THERE IS NOTHING LIKE MISTAKEN MARRIAGE (maybe that could happen when you fronicate and have a child out-of-wedlock then the man or women is compelled to marry the other). BUT EVERY MAN (especially) HAS A MISSION IN HIS RELATIONSHIPS. IT’S EITHER TO JUST HAVE FUN (fornicate all the way with not future plans) OR TO MARRY YOU. But there is always that moment of SILENCE.
At those moments – for those with the marriage mindset, He is still processing you in his heart. “Is she the one or not?”. But for the other kind of men, THEIR MOMENT OF SILENCE IS TO CONTEMPLATE ON WHEN TO LEAVE THE RELATIONSHIP– I have been there .
So women, maintain your dignity so you don’t feel USED .
So where were we? 😀 Hope it’s getting interesting. if you actually read to this point then I must say you are HUNGRY FOR WISDOM. Let’s learn a bit more.
Yeeeeesss! I did not skip the NOSE RING PART😀😀. Today If you saw a lady with a nose ring (almost all ladies wear bracelets), you would call her WORLDLY or Even a PROSTITUTE . But note that Rebekah was GIVEN this as a GIFT and she wore it as a sign of acceptance. Today, I guess you can’t wear a nose ring to church, PASTOR WILL DEMOTE YOU IF YOU ARE A WORKER 😀. LoL just saying.
The Next Vital Thing you will learn from this scripture is;
NEVER COMPLETELY RELAX AT YOUR PROSPECTIVE IN-LAWS HOME UNTILL THEY KNOW EXACTLY WHY YOU ARE THERE.
It might be implied but make sure there is a clear understanding. It will go a long way to define how they treat you.
From Genesis 24:30-48 (please take a look at it ) we observe certain things.
💡 Eliezer made clear his mission.
💡 JUST LIKE EVERY PARENT WOULD WANT TO KNOW THE CAREER OF THEIR SUITOR, Eliezer gave a profile of how Wealthy Abraham been by the grace of God and how he has GIVEN ISAAC EVERYTHING HE OWNS. So it’s more of like the “I AND MY FATHER ARE ONE” kind of profile. check verse 36.
💡Eliezer explained why he thinks Rebekah is God’s chosen wife for his master.
PLEASE IF YOU ARE GOING TO GET MARRIED TO A LADY, CONVINCE THEIR PARENTS WHY YOU THINK SHE IS GOD’S WILL FOR YOU.
All this “I saw a flower in your house.. “ story it’s too common in Africa. Be more innovative or simply explain how you met her. .
💡We are close to the most interesting part of this wonderful story now.
A MAN WHO KNOWS THAT A PARTICULAR WOMEN IS GODS WILL FOR HIM AND IS COMFORTABLE TO AN EXTENT – At least he can take care of the family, SHOULD NOT DELAY ANY FURTHER FROM MARRYING HER.
💡Why do I say so?
From bible, the parents of Rebekah accepted the proposal as the will of God but expected Eliezer to stay with them 10days. But Eliezer not being the suitor needs to take Rebekah to his master without delay. REBEKAH WAS NOT FORCED TO FOLLOW ELIEZER. SHE DECIDED TO DO SO. – Your Parents Should NEVER force you to marry anyone. they can give you reasons not to, but you decide.
Meanwhile, as ISAAC WAS MEDITATING IN THE FIELDS, HE LOOKED UP AND SAW THE CAMELS COMING. WHEN REBEKAH LOOKED UP AND SAW ISEAC, SHE QUICKLY DISMOUNTED FROM HER CAMEL – Genesis 24:64.
So let me ask you. Just think..
💡Did Rebekah have a Photo of Isaac to have acted that way?
💡Ok maybe they were chatting on Whatsapp?
All of that never happened because In the next verse, she asked Eliezer who that man was. And when Eliezer said “He is my master”, she immediately covered her face with her veil Untill the servant told Isaac everything he had done. There are two significant things to note here as Isaac made an informed decision.
1. Rebekah dismounted her camel OUT OF RESPECT.
2. She placed the veil over her face as the bride – symbolic.
ONLY THE MAN TO MARRY HER UNCOVERS THE VEIL FROM HER FACE.
THIS IS WHAT I LEARNT MY RESEARCH.
Decent women did not have to cover their faces, the ones that covered their faces were the prostitutes, as we can see in the passage I present below, in which Judah upon seeing his daughter in law Thamar, thought she was a prostitute because she had a veil covering her face. Even it says that the reason why he thought she was a prostitute was because she was covered. If all the women of that time would have been used to wearing a veil over their faces, Judah would not have thought that a woman who he saw with a veil covering her face was a prostitute.
“14 And she put her widow’s garments off from her,and covered her with a vail, and wrapped herself, and sat in an open place, which is by the way to Timnath; for she saw that Shelah was grown, and she was not given unto him to wife. 15 When Judah saw her, he thought her to be a harlot, because she had covered her face.” (Genesis 38:14-15
💡So the conclusion of the whole story is, FEAR GOD AND KEEP HIS COMMANDMENTS FOR THAT IS THE WHOLE DUTY OF MAN. There is always the origin of certain practices we have today in the bible. That’s why Christians believe as it is written in the bible, that THERE IS NOTHING NEW UNDER THE SUN. So let the bible📖 be your best book as well as mine. IT IS MY GUIDE. IT CAN BE YOURS TOO😀.
